Why Site Speed Affects Your Google Rankings

A slow website creates two problems at once: visitors abandon it before they see your offer, and search engines receive weaker signals about the experience. Speed is not the whole of SEO, but it is part of the foundation.

What Core Web Vitals measure

Core Web Vitals describe how quickly a page shows useful content, responds to input, and stays visually stable. They are based on real-world user experience rather than a perfect lab computer.

  • Largest Contentful Paint (LCP) measures when the main content becomes visible. Aim for 2.5 seconds or less.
  • Interaction to Next Paint (INP) measures responsiveness after an interaction. Reduce long JavaScript tasks that make clicks feel ignored.
  • Cumulative Layout Shift (CLS) measures unexpected movement. Reserve space for images, embeds, and dynamic content before they load.

Find the biggest bottleneck first

Run a page through PageSpeed Insights and compare the report with real analytics. A hero image, a third-party script, a slow font, or server response time can each be the largest issue on a different site.

Do not optimise every asset at once. Fix the largest contributor, measure again, and then move to the next constraint. This keeps the work tied to an actual improvement rather than a list of generic recommendations.

Practical fixes that compound

Serve appropriately sized WebP or AVIF images, lazy-load content below the fold, remove unused JavaScript, and load only the font weights you use. A CDN and good hosting help, but they cannot compensate for a page carrying unnecessary work.

Performance is a product decision. Agree a budget for page weight and third-party scripts before launch so speed does not become a rescue project later.
